Clubroll

Add a photo (and why we strip location data)

How to upload photographs for your site, what sizes and types work, why alt text is required, and what happens to the hidden details a phone adds.

Photographs make a club's site feel alive, and any photograph from a phone will do.

Upload one

  1. Open Site and find the Photographs card.
  2. Choose a file and describe it in a sentence.
  3. Press Upload photograph.

The library holds up to 30 photographs. Use Earlier and Later to reorder and Delete to remove one.

What works

  • JPEG, PNG or WebP files, up to 8 MB each.
  • At least 480 pixels along the longer side. 1,600 or more looks best. A phone photograph of any size is fine; Clubroll makes the smaller sizes for you.
  • Not SVG, GIF or an animated picture. Clubroll checks what the file really is, not just its name, and a file that is not a picture, or is cut off, is refused with a sentence saying what to do.

Clubroll makes several sizes of each photograph and serves the one that fits the visitor's screen, so the site stays quick on a phone.

Alt text is required

Describe the photograph for someone who cannot see it, in a sentence. It is read aloud by screen readers and shown if the picture does not load. "Photo" or a file name is refused, with an example of what to write instead.

Why location data is removed

A phone puts hidden details into every photograph: where it was taken, which device, sometimes the owner's name and the time. Posting that on a public website can show where a member lives. So the web versions of every photograph are made fresh, without those details. The original is kept for your export with its hidden details stripped as well, leaving only the rotation, so it opens the right way up.

Where photographs show

On the home page's hero and gallery sections, and in newsletters, through the same library. A newsletter picture block can only use this club's own library.

Your logo has its own button, Upload logo. It must be a PNG, JPEG or WebP at least 32 pixels across. It is stored no larger than 320 pixels and appears at the top of the site and at the top of every newsletter.
