Sending limits for new clubs

Why a new club can send a limited number of emails a day at first, how the limits grow, and what to do when a list is bigger than today's limit.

Email providers look hard at a sender who suddenly sends a lot. So every club starts with a modest limit that grows each week from its first send. A club that signs up and waits a month still starts at the bottom, because the clock begins at the first send, not at sign-up.

The limits

| Days since your club's first send | Most emails in a day | Most in an hour | |---|---|---| | 0 to 2 | 300 | 300 | | 3 to 6 | 600 | 600 | | 7 to 13 | 1,500 | 1,000 | | 14 to 29 | 5,000 | 2,000 | | 30 onwards | 20,000 | 5,000 |

The limits count everything your club sends through Clubroll: newsletters, essential notices, dues reminders and receipts. A typical small club's whole roll, tens to a few hundred members, goes out on the first day.

What happens when a list is too big

An issue that does not fit is refused whole, never half-sent. The composer says that new clubs send a little more each week to build a good sending name, how many emails your club may send today, how many are left, and how big this list is. Then you can:

  • send to a smaller group now, by choosing a narrower segment such as "Opted in",
  • or wait until the limit has grown.

Dues reminders are handled gently: the part that fits goes out and the rest keep their place, so they go the next morning.

Why one number for everyone

The limits protect your club, and every other club that shares the same sending address. A fresh sender with a big list is the usual cause of mail going to spam.

What does not count

A send that was refused, and a member who was left out, do not use up your allowance: only messages handed to the mail service count.

If your list is much bigger

If your whole roll is bigger than the limit for your first days, wait until the limit has grown to fit it. The table above shows when it rises: after 3, 7, 14 and 30 days from your first send.
